Aliceteria is enraged to discover her Crapsack World is just entertainment and all her struggles to make it better are meaningless. Mamika initially has a very bad freak out when she quickly learns a lot of her genre conventions don't apply in the real world and it shakes her belief in what she is and what she should be doing. They had the hardest time dealing with reality, though for different reasons. On that front the two who stuck out to me most are Mamika, the Magical Girl show protagonist, and Aliceteria, the protagonist of a dark fantasy manga that seems more like Beserk than anything else. The way different characters explore aspects totally alien to their genres or formats, how they come to terms with what they are in their own unique ways, really left an impression on me. After that, everyone has a more specific beef that everyone else didn't mention. I'm amused that while everyone agrees the show isn't A+ material, the most shared stated reason is that it gets too talky. My allergy of idiot plots is on the extreme end, so others can definitely enjoy the show as it is. The show has so many good elements that I'd never discourage anyone from trying tit. Sure, the scene was already moving away from them, mirroring the global trend towards franchises and adaptations, and there have been some show like this after, but the critical panning those three got must have scared the studios somewhat. I'm hardly an anime historian or business insider, but I often fault Re:Creators, Aldonoah.Zero and Guilty Crown, though not only those three exclusively, of these high budget risky anime originals shows no longer being made. That's why it drives me up the wall how badly Re:Creators cocked it up. Shows this set up to succeed because of a big risk taken on them are vanishingly rare. The show had enough of a budget to not have to compromise in realizing its vision and really good character designs that straddle the line of being original enough, yet it's still clearl who they're expies of. An anime only story written by the creator of Black Lagoon, directed by the guy who did Fate/Zero and Sawano Hiroyuki making banger music for it. Re:Creators itself is kind of a minor miracle. It's possible, but astronomically unlikely.
